Staycations: Sunset magic at Cayman Kai

At the northeastern tip of the North Sound lies an absolute gem with beautiful snorkelling and diving, stress-free beachtime, kid-friendly seas and a couple of the best-loved bars on the island.

It’s also one of the most magical surroundings you can imagine; watch the sun sighing its sunset hues over the horizon as you lie back in your hammock, mudslide (invented up at Rum Point, by legend) in hand. This is truly what life’s about and for those of us lucky enough to live in the Cayman Islands it’s possible to head up for a Staycation – people save for years for a couple of weeks here, and yet residents can nip up for the weekend. It’s a special thought.

“There’s Rum Point where you can play some beach volleyball and stay active,” enthuses Erin Bodden of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association.

“It’s nice and shaded so you’re not in the direct sun – it is such a different experience from being on the Seven Mile strip. Go up to Starfish Point for a fabulous experience with the starfish.”

One thing about this area of Grand Cayman is the number of villas and condos that can be hired out by residents.

“So you can still have that family, cook-at-home experience. You don’t necessarily have to go out to a restaurant every night; you can have a barbecue on the deck. If you’re not a resident of the island who lives on the water, this is a great opportunity to experience that firsthand, see what it’s all about and go for a nighttime swim, for instance.”

Bioluminescence

Kaibo is a renowned beach bar and restaurant and if it happens to be a full moon, their Luna del Mar parties are always very popular. And there’s plenty more to do.

“There’s also the bioluminescence tour with Cayman Kayaks at Rum Point which is a rare and enchanting display of underwater lights.”

It all makes for a magical experience and something that is just a short ride from Rum Point, involving moderate paddling.

“Red Sail Sports has great watersports offers which are incredible for people who love getting out and having fun; plus over the summertime there is a Catamaran ferry with a dinner reservation – talk about Rum Point being transformed! During the day you’re on the beach there but this is a great opportunity to see it at night; you dock, the tiki torches are out and you have dinner by candlelight in this glamorous location. It feels very islandy, a true island experience.

“It is really romantic if it is a couple and you can also get together with friends and have a real party up there. It’s great.”

Weekender has been lucky enough to experience the Rum Point restaurant experience at sunset – it is quite spectacular and – if you were wondering – the selection of rums here is marvellous. Tell the ever-knowledgable JB that we sent you and he’ll guide you through a rather excellent rum and wine list.

And not to mention the possibility of visiting Stingray City – a legendary place in itself. The sandbar is extremely kid-friendly and even if you’re not a keen snorkeller, simply standing in the water in the company of those gentle, magnificent beasts is something very, very special.

Cayman Kai is a destination within itself; it’s a delight just to spend a couple of hours there, but making a weekend of it is guaranteed to give anyone a new perspective on life, sand and everything.
