Mitsubishi Evolutions came out in force at a recent drag race. The sports cars should make an impact at a local autocross meet.
This Sunday 28 August sees the latest instalment of the Time Attack series. Put on by the Cayman Motorsports Association, the race is expected to start at 12noon on the Progressive loop on Sparky Drive.
Leading the Evo charge at Time Attack will be A.J. Conolly. He is expected to unveil his latest acquisition in the form of a white Evo 8. The car is relatively stock though the exhaust and intake have been modified. Conolly is slated to be part of the All-Wheel Drive segment.
A veteran on the motorsports scene, Conolly has competed in a variety of vehicles including a Honda Integra Type-R he once called ‘Plan A.’ His biggest claim to fame was having Cayman’s fastest stock turbo Evo III (he ran the black sedan to a time of 7.7 seconds at 89mph on the 1/8 track at Breakers Speedway).
Aside from Conolly and his Evo, much of the focus should be on Keith ‘Speedy’ Tibbetts III. Speedy claimed the May edition of Time Attack behind the wheel of his Valvoline Subaru Impreza Sti. Tibbetts III has long dominated the local autocross scene and is reportedly contemplating using his Impreza for circuit racing at Jamaica’s famed Dover race track.
News of Time Attack comes after the Cayman Islands Drag Racing Association staged a race this month. Evos grabbed a pair of podium spots with Michael ‘Bad Oil’ Williams taking his Evo III to a time of 5.93s, making it the first local car with a four cylinder engine to run a time of five seconds.
Mandatory registration for this weekend’s autocross is this Friday 26th at 7pm at Automotive Art.
