Kings launches indoor sevens

In the Cayman Islands five-a-side indoor football is a well-established and popular sport. A new twist on that came to life over the weekend in the form of seven-a-side football.

Kings Sports Centre put on a seven-a-side summer camp focusing on kids aged 4-10. The programme covered the basics such as shooting, dribbling, passing, heading and set pieces. Leading the youngsters was Irish football coach Adam Luke Geoghegan, who states the camp was beneficial for the kids.

“I’m preaching the European style of football to the young kids in Cayman,” Geoghegan said. “Being here indoors at Kings gives them a safe, fun environment to develop their skills. They all have sporting ability and I feel the camps were a success as the kids had a good time.”

Interestingly, Geoghegan has a degree in Fitness and Health Science from the University of Limerick. Before coming to Cayman he served as a sports development officer in his native Ireland.

Some 30 youngsters took part in the programme. Among them was Jonah Narborough, 10. The Cayman Prep year six student states it was worthwhile attending the camp.

“Football has been my favourite sport since I was two or three years-old,” Narborough said.

“The camp helped me a lot and Mr. Adam was a great coach. My favourite player is Frank Lampard and I want to be a professional footballer, maybe play for Chelsea one day.”

For the record BCQS and Mourant Ozannes were the major corporate sponsors. The initiative falls under the School of Fitness branch of Cayman Sports Authority and works alongside the Save Our Youth Foundation.
