Brooke Parchment is Miss Teen Cayman Islands 2011
Brooke Parchment is the Leo Club of Grand Cayman’s 33rd Miss Teen Cayman Islands 2011, but for the judges it was no easy task as all were winners in their eyes.
Brooke, a St. Ignatius 11th-grade student, was crowned at the Lions Centre last Saturday night. Mariah Tibbetts was first runner-up and Juliana Wood, second runner-up.
Before the night ended, Mariah Tibbetts, Juliana Wood and Nicole Martin would tie for first place with Best Legs, and Brooke and Mandy Wilkinson would tie for first place with Best in Gown, but Brooke put her best leg forward and walked away with the Miss Teen title in a stunning Farida Wong gold sequin evening dress.
Along with her title, Brooke won the Miss Personality and Most Talented titles, a tertiary scholarship, a laptop, phone and a host of gift certificates.
‘I was shocked’
“… We all had the characteristics and qualities to be the next Miss Teen Cayman Islands,” Brooke said in an interview later. “I waited in anticipation to hear the names called and when I heard my name, I was shocked, happy and excited to be chosen. I thanked God for giving me the right frame of mind to enter the contest and doing so well and for the support of others.
Brooke claims it was not until after the opening dance that she calmed down and reigned in her jitters, after which she said everything became hectic rushing from room to room getting hair and makeup done, which left no time to be scared, only to concentrate on getting out on stage and wooing the judges.
“I enjoyed the casual wear segment because we had to do self- introductions and I felt very confident in the outfit I was wearing, a one-shoulder short leopard-print dress,” she said.
Brooke also put her intelligence up front answering the question, how can cultural diversity bring peace to our Island? Her response went over well with the audience: “By bringing new skills and ideas not only in the community but also in the work force to the island.”
Playing the flute for the past four years also paid off for Brooke, as her performance of a prelude by Jon Rutter won her the Best Talent title.
‘A great experience’
“The Miss Teen pageant is a great experience and I believe all young ladies should take part in it,” she said. “It not only boosts your confidence but helps to improve you in other areas that requires certain skills such as public speaking, organisational skills and teaches you more about yourself. You also get to meet new people and make great friendships.
Brooke plans to enter the Miss Cayman Pageant when she becomes of age, but for now as Miss Teen she will continue to expand on her platform, which is visiting the high schools to speak about bullying among teenagers and its effects, and continue to work with the Frances Bodden Girls Home. She thanks those involved for her success in becoming the new Miss Teen.
Leo Club Miss Teen Chair Jamie Rogers said the club had promised the audience a bigger and better show, which they pulled off. She said the girls had enjoyed the journey, which took them through an experience of grace, poise, talent and intelligence. All the girls, she said, were fit to represent Cayman as ambassadors and it took lots of courage, dedication and perseverance to enter the competition.
The young women made the committee and those involve proud, she concluded.
