El Salvador have sights set on Dominican Republic showdown

While Cayman prepares for its Suriname clash, El Salvador will have its focus on Dominicans.

The Central Americans travel to the Dominican Republic on 10 October to face the Spanish side. The squads are part of Group A in the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football group qualifying stage for the 2014 Fédération Internationale de Football Association World Cup in Brazil.

After beating Cayman 4-1 at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, head coach Ruben Yelen offered some praise for the local team while discussing his team’s mind-set.

“The Cayman people should be very happy for the performance of the national team,” Yelen said. “There are great talented players here who showed good tactical awareness. From here we play the Dominican Republic and then face Cayman again at home. It’s important to fortify the team as we have an enormous future ahead of us.

“The victory here is important as it was important to return home with points. Tactically we have to do much of the same because we were solid. I’m confident and ready for 10 October.”

El Salvador won in large part due to the performance of team captain Luis Anaya. Primarily a defender, Anaya netted two goals in the second half. He states the final score does not tell the true story of the match.

“Against Cayman we had to work hard to score,” Anaya said. “We had to show great patience because Cayman were working hard to score too. I saw it as a competitive game that was more about us working hard for the victory than Cayman making mistakes.

“We got a great result and we got points in the group, which is important. If we believe we can win, we can win. The Dominicans do a lot of work on the pitch and that is an important match.”
