Church service for body and soul

Most people go to church just to pray, but on Sunday, congregants at one service in Cayman will be looking after their bodies as well as their souls.

The Cayman Islands Cancer Society and the Cayman Heart Fund will be at Savannah United Church from 8.30am, Sunday, 25 September, to give presentations on cardiovascular disease in women, cervical cancer and the human papillomavirus (HPV).

There will also be free screening for cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure and BMI and free pap smear vouchers will be given to women who qualify.

Victoria Anderson, project coordinator of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, said she hoped that other churches will participate in similar presentations and screenings in the future.

“It is important for women to have screening done because cervical cancer is preventable and there are lots of women out there not taking the opportunity to get screened. HPV is also preventable as there is a vaccine now that can prevent HPV. Early screening is very important,” she said.

Ms Anderson said reaching women about these health issues through the churches meant a cross section of the community could be contacted and made aware of information about these diseases.

“Any avenue we can use to get through to women, to let them know how important it is to get their screening done, we will use,” she said.

Those who want to avail of the free screening should fast beforehand. Breakfast will be served afterwards.

The screenings and presentations start at 8.30am and the church service begins at 10am.

Participants are also encouraged to come dressed in red to support the cause.
