Members of the public, along with representatives of the media, came together for an evening of festivities recently to launch the Island’s newest radio station, STAR 92.7FM,
The station, which is expected to go live by the end of September, will primarily be a hip hop station. It has already generated a significant amount of attention, thanks in no small part to the profile and notoriety owner John “Selecta Renegade” Watler has developed over time as, arguably, one of the hottest disc jockeys in the Western Hemisphere.
Watler explains his vision for STAR 92.7FM and what inspired him to get involved in radio:
“I was in Miami with a friend who had a radio licence he was not using, and while enjoying the Miami breeze it occurred to me that this might be an avenue that would bring the whole deejaying aspect of things in my career and my time in music full circle.
“I must be honest – I did not expect to be doing this and it was a privilege to even be able to apply, let alone be sanctioned to contribute to the airwaves in such a meaningful way.”
Watler says it was also his vision to give quality local acts a place to have their music played, heard and celebrated.
According to Samantha Whittaker of Fresh Images PR, “STAR 92.7 will be a most dynamic addition to Cayman’s airwaves that will fill the needs of a large hip hop, R&B and mixed show audience. Within only two weeks of launching the social media marketing pages, STAR 92.7 has had a resoundingly positive response from the community.”
She said in addition to filling a large void in radio selection, Star 92.7 will use cutting-edge technology with the aim of making a noticeable impact in the FM frequency landscape.
In a press release, Mr. Watler said, “We focus on music that is proven to do well on commercial radio in other areas but has not been adopted in Cayman as yet, and we are looking forward to being the station that bridges that gap. We also realise that since we have been deeply involved in the international music scene for so many years that we possess knowledge and contacts that most other radio stations simply don’t have access to.”
