Matt Bone went 3 for 3 with a home run and Wil Pineau drove in three runs with two hits to the lead the Coors Light Chuggers to a 11-3 victory over the Glovernauts last Monday in adult co-ed softball action at the Field of Dreams.
The victory kept the Chuggers in first place in the B-League first division with only a handful of regular season games left to go. Earlier this month the Glovernauts, 6-4, handed the Chuggers their first loss of the season with a 13-6 win.
With a record of 8-1, the Chuggers went a half-game up in division race, with the Master Batters close behind at 7-1. Because the Chuggers beat the Master Batters earlier in the season, they hold the first tie breaker if the two teams end up tied.
Chuggers captain Alan Markoff said the team just had to take care of business the rest of the way.
“We control our own destiny,” he said. “If we win the final few games, we’ll win the division and have the number one seed. If we play the way we did, I’m confident we’ll do just that.”
Chuggers co-captain Mark Wallace said Monday’s win was sweet revenge for the previous loss, which occurred on his birthday.
“This was a belated birthday present,” said Wallace, who only batted during the game as he battles an unfortunate couch injury. “They beat us by seven runs; we beat them by eight. I like the way that worked out.”
The Chuggers beat the Glovernauts without several of their top players who were either injured of fighting the flu. Others were off the island.
“We were shorthanded; they were shorthanded. We still had to play the game and do the best we could,” said Markoff.
The Chuggers got off to a good start, scoring one run in the first and then six runs in the second inning to open up a 7-0 lead, and they never were threatened after that.
Meanwhile, the Chugger defence turned a season-high three double plays, and held the Glovernauts scoreless in four of the seven innings.
“Our defence was the difference in the game,” said Markoff. “We made most of the plays today and we won. We didn’t make a lot of plays in last week’s game and we lost. It’s not rocket science.”
The game ended when Chuggers pitcher Neil Clements struck out Furious Whelen swinging with a filthy sinker.
Wallace was impressed.
“Furious was wailing furiously, but he missed,” he said. “All you heard was whoosh. There was no joy in Glovernautville; the mighty Furious had struck out.”
Hammers hammer BritCay
Darrell Pattyfoot hit three home runs – two of them clearing the fence – to lead the A.L. Thompson’s Hammers to a 22-10 win over the BritCay Premiums.
Hammers captain Bobby Boggess, who hit a grand slam himself, said Pattyfoot’s home runs were majestic.
“They were monster home runs that went into someone’s back yard,” he said.
Simon Rivers also hit a home run and Molly Moore went 4-4 for the Hammers.
