Mel repeats as Vivian’s champ

Mel Tagalog went into the Vivian Rankine memorial darts tournament as the heavy favourite. Over the weekend he proved his form is still unparalleled.

The Filipino sensation earned his second straight tournament title at the Corner Pocket bar. He would beat out a field of some 25 competitors to earn the overall trophy and singles A division crown (along with a second-place spot in the A division doubles segment).

For tournament organizer Martin Bodden, what stood out most about Tagalog’s performance was his flawless score of 180 points.

“Mel and Jun Lapuz were the only players to score 180, which is a perfect high score,” Bodden said. “Both did it during the singles competition. They used three darts and hit a triple 20, with each dart worth 60 points. That’s not easily accomplished in darts.

“I’ve been playing darts from the early 1980s and I probably got three of them in my time. That tells you how rare that is. It’s not easy to get so kudos to them.”

The runner-up for the overall tournament championship was Eugene Deguzman, who claimed the singles B division title. The other winners were Rodan Asuncion and Edwin Andrade (doubles A division), Paul Anglin and Norrin Stewart (doubles B division) and overall women’s champion Carol Johnson.

The final results saw Randy Cruz and Arthur Ebanks finish second and third respectively in the singles A division category. Jun Lapuz and John Nixon claimed second and third place spots in the B division. Over in the doubles segment, third place in the A division went to Antonio Ayuson and Jasper Esguerra while Robert Bodden and Arthur Ebanks (second) and Nida Germina and Rene Delacruz (third) were the B division runners-up.

In keeping with tradition, Vivian Rankine’s son George Bodden threw the tournament’s first few darts.
