One of local sports’ biggest displays of pageantry is taking place this weekend.
The Cayman Islands Netball Association, in partnership with the Ministry of Sports, is slated to stage its annual opening uniform parade on Saturday, 26 November. The Truman Bodden Sports Complex is expected to host Cayman team and school clubs from 3.30pm.
Saturday’s parade, which has taken place for over 12 years, marks the formal start of the 2011-2012 open league, the national women’s competition. For association president Lucille Seymour, the event is meaningful both for sports and the wider community.
“This function is touted by the media and the community as one that is quite beneficial to sports and the youths over the years,” Seymour said. “Netball is a sport that really develops team work and tactical development. Many of our outstanding women in this country give credit to netball for their excellent problem solving skills and social development.”
Teams will be judged in various categories. Prizes are expected to handed out for areas such as best uniform, best march and best behaviour. Volunteers are also slated to receive prizes.
Last year numerous sides won awards for looking their best, including John A Cumber Primary School (Under-9 and Under-11 categories), John Gray High School (U18 group) and Rising Stars netball club (Adult category).
News of the parade comes after team Unity held a fundraiser rally last week at New Testament Church. A number of squads took part with Roma being overall winners while Rising Stars placed third.
