Beauty pageant at Harquail set

The Glamorous Granny Committee will be hosting the Cayman Golden Girl, the Bold and Beautiful and Modern Miss contests at the Harquail Theatre on Saturday, December 17.

Organiser Jewel Smalldon has said it will be a glitzy affair. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

The 13 women entering the pageant are: Darene Scott, Levern Warren, Sherry Ann Smith, Darlene Dilbert, Gay Joy Ebanks, Winsome Johnson, Evelyn Walsh, Merita Connor, Suzette Nelson, Sandra Mendez, Gayle Clarke, Kizzie Codlyn and Erna Jane Jackson.

At 82, Mrs. Smalldon said it is a good outlet for women to meet new people and make friends, as well as to give back to the community. Entering a beauty pageant can be new and exciting, she said.

“You are never too old to feel young,” Mrs. Smalldon said. “Proceeds from this year’s pageant will go towards assisting the children of Anna (Evans), who went missing earlier this year.”

Besides gifts, winners earn the right to travel overseas and represent the Cayman Islands, Mrs. Smalldon said.

Mrs. Smalldon said the reigning Glamorous Granny, Celina Dilbert, was a runner-up in the senior’s pageant in Boston last year. She also represented the Cayman Islands at a pageant in Houston, Texas earlier this year.
