More affordable homes for Brac

Construction work has started on eight new affordable homes at West End and Watering Place on Cayman Brac.

The homes are being built as part of the Sister Islands Affordable Housing Development Corporation’s programme, which has already constructed eight homes in West End.

“Since the start of the new year, we are getting a lot of calls and people are dropping by the office to see if they meet criteria for home ownership,” said Taryn Rose, the affordable housing corporation’s office administrator.

The basic criterion for homeowners is the ability to repay the home loan, said Christine Maltman, the Sister Islands Affordable Housing Development’s chairperson.

“I would like to encourage everyone who would like to own a home to begin the application process. The SIAHDC board of directors considers areas like income, property ownership and family situation, as well as the ability to service a mortgage,” Ms Maltman said.

The current plans are for one, two-bedroom and three, 3-bedroom homes to be constructed at the Watering Place location, and four three-bedroom homes at West End. The plans are similar to the existing homes, which are 855 square feet for a two-bedroom home and 1,073 square feet for a three-bedroom unit.

“Our progress is the result of working cooperatively with our local communities and experienced contractors,” Ms Maltman said.

Deputy Premier and Minister of District Administration, Works, Lands and Agriculture Juliana O’Connor-Connolly said: “It is our goal to provide safe and affordable housing for the people of these islands. The SIAHDC, along with my ministry, is striving to build a strong future for families and their communities and this programme helps us to provide a solid foundation for our citizens to build and raise their families.”

A groundbreaking cermony was held on the Brac on 9 December to mark the latest phase of construction for which eight contractors have been awarded contract to build the eight homes.
