Giants towered thanks to Eli

The New York Giants are the new favourites to win Super Bowl after eliminating last year’s champions, the Green Bay Packers, from the NFL play-offs with a 37-20 road win to reach Sunday’s NFC title game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Eli Manning had three touchdown passes, including two long strikes to Hakeem Nicks, and the Giants defence contained the explosive Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers to end Green Bay’s shot at becoming the first team in seven years to retain the Super Bowl. The Giants, who won the Super Bowl four years ago with an improbable run to the championship as a wild card, are now one win away from returning to the title game on 5 February in Indianapolis.

The 49ers on Saturday edged New Orleans Saints 36-32 in one of the finest postseason games in NFL history. Earlier, Baltimore secured an AFC Championship showdown against New England after their mean defence helped them to a 20-13 victory over the Houston Texans.

The Ravens travel to New England, who thrashed the Denver Broncos 45-10 in Saturday’s other AFC divisional playoff game, with a place in the Super Bowl up for grabs.
