We’ve all been on the road and have had to deal with them: Drivers who park their wide cars on the side of narrow roads, drivers who think signaling is optional, and drivers who seem to be auditioning as stunt drivers for the next Fast and the Furious movie.
It can make driving in Cayman as stressful and raises the risk. But a long-term solution is at hand. It’s called getting to them while they’re young. At least this is one of the solutions that Saxon Motor & General Insurance Company Ltd. (SaxonMG) has adopted to take a proactive approach towards helping to keep Cayman’s roads safe and mitigate the risk of accidents.
This approach to target the young drivers began in October 2011 with Cayman’s first ever Driver’s Education programme which was launched for Year 11 students at John Gray and Clifton Hunter High Schools. The programme has two phases: the first, which was completed in November 2011, was the theoretical part and included a four-week, one-hour per week driver education course taught by senior inspectors Roy Bush and Burmon Scott of the Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing. Over 350 enthusiastic students participated in the introductory course.
Of these participants, those who demonstrated knowledge and responsible driving awareness in the first phase where then eligible to enroll in the second phase of the programme, which takes place in 2012, where they have one-on-one training, learning to drive with qualified driving instructors.
The programme’s goal is to expose as many young adults as possible to instruction that instills in them safe driving habits for years to come. It’s sponsored by SaxonMG along with dms Organization Ltd., Prestige Motors, the Ministry of Education, the Royal Cayman Islands Police, and the Department of Vehicle and Drivers Licensing.
“This young driver programme is the culmination of a community effort by business, government, and education partnering together with a common commitment to young drivers and road safety for all in the Cayman Islands,” said SaxonMG CEO Brian Williams.
Sponsoring Cayman’s first Driver’s Education programme fits well with SaxonMG’s emphasis on both community service and innovation. Another example of leadership by SaxonMG is shown in their initiative to provide online “quick quotes” for insurance policies.
“We are the only car insurance company in Cayman that lets you get car insurance quotes and buy car insurance online from the comfort of your home or office and we’re very proud to be able to offer this technology to allow a more convenient process in this day and age when speed and convenience is of top priority!” says Williams.
