The lead at the top of the Heineken Sunday League was stretched to six points after Match Day 14 last weekend when Harry’s took full advantage of second place Agua slipping up against the Wanderers.
Leaders Harry’s went into the match at Ed Bush clear favourites against Old Boys but it was the underdogs who went ahead through veteran striker George McKenzie after six minutes. Harry’s Dan Stubber got his first of two goals soon after. Harry’s then took the lead through Dave Hubble. Into the second half Harry’s were put firmly on top with two from the league top scorer Floyd ‘Irons’ McKenzie to bring his tally to 17. Stubber chipped in to complete the 5-1 rout.
Second placed Agua slipped to a 6-1 defeat against a rampant Triple Crown Wanderers side at TE McField Annex. Wanderers were two up at the interval through Johnny McLaughlin and Johnny Johnson. At the start of the second half Agua applied the pressure but Wanderers went further ahead thanks to Marc Brown’s fancy footwork. Agua regained a glimmer of hope when Wanderers defender John O’Brien delicately lobbed his own goal keeper whilst attempting to clear the ball to make it 3-1.
O’Brien redeemed himself with a strong run and finish for his third goal of the season and Brown contributed two more for an excellent hat-trick, the last being an unstoppable shot that flew into the corner.
Third place Boca Juniors completed a routine 4-2 win against bottom side CML Claymores. Boca held a 3-1 lead going in at half-time thanks to Ken Downey, Henry Mitchell and Ariel Tatum with CML’s reply coming from Mike Hall. After the break, Boca’s Luis Medina got another and CML’s experienced poacher Alan Johnson got the final goal.
The final game was between Prison and a MC Devils side that, given their recent good form, were confident. However, it was Prison who celebrated a comprehensive 6-2 win. Devils had enjoyed a 2-1 half-time lead thanks to James Plowright and a low diving header from Colm Flanagan. These two goals sandwiched a fine equalising strike from Kenroy Wills from 35 yards.
The second half started with Prison equalising through Kevin Gillets and soon afterwards took the lead for the first time with a spectacular Shannon Hannah half volley. Prison put three more past a fragile Devils defence. First, Willets got his second of the game before Andrew Lewis and Brady Grant added.
