Get Red-dy

March is heart health awareness month and it’s also that time of year for women to don their red dresses and learn more about the disease that is the No. 1 killer of women.

At Cayman Heart Fund’s annual fundraising event next week, the Learn and Live Red Dress Luncheon, the featured speaker will be best selling author of the book Miami Mediterranean Diet and director of the Centre for Prevention and Wellness, Dr. Michael Ozner.

The luncheon, sponsored by Baptist Health International, offers an opportunity to dress up in your most striking red dress, enjoy a delicious and healthy lunch and learn how to keep your heart pumping healthily.

This popular, usually sold out, fundraising event is designed to raise awareness about heart disease in women.

Dr. Ozner’s topic at the luncheon, which will be held on Friday, 2 March, at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman from 12.30pm to 2pm, will be “A Six-Week Cardiac Makeover for a Lifetime of Optimal Health”.

His “Miami Mediterranean Diet” was voted as one of the top three most popular diets of 2011.

Prior to the luncheon, a Women’s Heart Care Extravaganza Expo will be held.

“Women need to take care of themselves both inside and out, so this year, Cayman Heart Fund has created the Women’s Heart Care Extravaganza Expo as an exciting pre-luncheon event hosted by The Cayman Islands Heart Truth Champions,” says Dr. Sook Yin, medical director for Cayman Heart Fund.

“Luncheon attendees will have exclusive access to local businesses as they display their hottest products and services to keep women healthy and beautiful both inside and out and begin their heart health makeover,” she says.

Local clothing retailers will display red dresses as a reminder that “Heart Disease Doesn’t Care What You Wear – It’s the No. 1 Killer of Women.”

The Cayman Islands Heart Truth Champions – community members dedicated to raising awareness about heart health – will carry out blood pressure checks, measure waist circumference and do body mass index screenings as well as give out nutrition and dietary advice.

The Women’s Heart Care Expo will open at 10:30am until the luncheon begins at 12:30pm.

Expo attendees will enjoy a musical interlude by Kate Allenger and exhibits from businesses, including Mobile Fitness Solutions, CrossFit 7 Mile, Bliss Living Yoga, Body Works, Silver Rain Spa, Chocolate Creations, Black Trumpet, Tea Time in Cayman, Gawk & Leer, Audi (Arch Automotive), Kara’s Glass Garden, Beach Bubbles, A Touch of Thai, Market at the Grounds, Beyond Basics, Magnum Jewelers and Every Bloomin’ Thing.

The red dress displays will be supplied by Funky Monkey, NKY, Off the Peg, Arabus Boutique, Ziba, Reba Dilbert and Silver Rain Retail Store.

The luncheon won’t be all talk. The food cooked by the Ritz-Carlton chefs will be heart healthy and promises to be delicious. Every Bloomin’ Thing will again create the floral table centre pieces. Magnum Jewelers has also announced that part of the proceeds from sales of its jewellery throughout March will be donated to Cayman Heart Fund.

There will also be exciting raffle prizes from Atlantic, Le Visage, Silver Rain Spa, Tea Time in Cayman, Audi, Bliss Living Yoga, Drink Fresh Juice, Chocolate Creations, Mobile Fitness Solutions, Black Trumpet, Kara’s Glass Garden, Icoa, Magnum Jewelry, Red Sail Sports and Patrick Broderick Photography.

The day after the luncheon, on Saturday, 3 March, the Cayman Heart Fund will also host its fifth annual Heart Health Fair at the Arts and Recreation Centre in Camana Bay, from 8am to 2pm. All are welcome.
