Breaking a losing streak often leads to victories. One local basketball team hoping to do that is the Island Heritage Silver Mist.
Island Heritage beat Welly’s Cool Spot 54-52 last Thursday in the Sir Vassel Johnson Hall at the University College of the Cayman Islands. The contest is part of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2012 national women’s league.
The victory is the Silver Mist’s first this year, after starting out 0-3. Helping the side to break through this time around were Scimone Campbell (16 points, seven rebounds and five steals), Sue Nixon (12 points, seven rebounds) and Renee Thompson (four points, 12 rebounds and four assists).
Silver Mist head coach Daniel Augustine had his hands full with Welly’s, who dropped to 2-2 with the loss. Island Heritage had a 28-24 half-time lead before getting a 9-7 edge in the third quarter and seeing Welly’s have a 19-17 advantage in the final period. Spurring the youngsters were Chloe Powery (15 points, four rebounds and three steals), Rochel Gardener (10 points, five rebounds, four steals) and Christina McLean (10 points, six rebounds, two steals).
Though Imani Abdul Jabbar did not have a great game (two points, zero assists), Welly’s did get solid efforts from Chantelle Day and Schamarrah McCarthy (who combined for 26 rebounds, 11 points).
While Welly’s play this Thursday, 1 March, at 6pm, the Silver Mist are off until next Thursday, 8 March. Interestingly, both teams will face off against the Lady Wolves.
