Cool Spot seek to freeze Flames

Welly’s Cool Spot sound confident in an upset in women’s basketball.

The squad is playing in the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2012 national women’s league playoffs. Welly’s play the reigning national champions Home Gas Flames on Thursday, 12 April, at 6.15pm at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre.

For Welly’s head coach Redver Ebanks, there is already talk of a championship run.

“We have never lost a game once we score above 60 points,” Ebanks said. “We want to outscore teams. With a lot of hard work we can make it to the finals and win the championship.

“I’m not worried about any team as we have beaten everyone at full strength. We can win in the final and our chances are good against everyone. For right now, our focus is on the Flames.”

The first round encounter is a best-of-three series with game two next Thursday, 19 April and game three, if necesssary, on 23 April. Welly’s are the third seed with a 3-4 record while Home Gas come in second at 4-3.

Both sides have star talent in La-Torae Nixon (a league-best 20.2 points per game and 12.3 rebounds per contest, second in the competition) and Sade Wood (13.6ppg) for the Flames and Chloe Powery (12.3ppg) and Christina McLean (9.0ppg) for the Cool Spot.

Ebanks states the game plan for Welly’s is to limit Nixon and Wood.

“We know La-Torae will get what La-Torae gets. She will get a bunch of points, a lot of rebounds and a ton of blocks. We want to limit her touches and the points she scores. At the same time we don’t want to ignore the other players.

“For example, with Meredith Whitney we want to limit the amount of outside shots she takes and we want to cut down on the fast-break points from Sade.

“We’re going to dictate the tempo of the basketball game. The game will be played the way we want to play. Since moving to Camana Bay, our shooting percentage has gone up a lot and we have a lot of good shooters. Once we do a little of everything, things should come out nice.”

Aside from Welly’s-Home Gas, Thursday also sees the Dominos Lady Heels starting their series against the Lady Wolves.
