Stars collide as title chase intensifies

Rising Stars A still have hopes of a regular season netball crown.

The squad plays this Saturday, 14 April, against All Stars A (sponsored by Central Cooling) in the Cayman Islands Netball Association 2012 open league. The match takes place at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts from 6.30pm.

The contest will impact the knockout/playoff stage of the competition. Rising Stars are currently in second place at 7-1 while All Stars are third at 6-1. Both of their losses came to top-ranked 7-1 Roma A. Saturday’s contest, essentially a playoff preview, serves as the regular season finale for RS while AS have another game to play on 26 April.

Saturday’s match should be a high-scoring one as both squads boast powerful offences. Rosemarie Wilson and Marcia Moiten steady the RS offence while Pauline Bodden and Stacy Reid-Satahoo guide the AS assault. Out of the two, RS might have the momentum as they recently clobbered Ernst and Young Hot Shots while AS are still smarting from their loss to Roma.

Aside from the RS-AS showdown, Saturday also features the Flames Strikers battling Unity A. The regular season finale for the Flames also has playoff implications as the Strikers are currently fourth in the standings at 5-3. Kemoya Goulbourne and Unity A are 3-4, just behind a 4-3 All Stars B team featuring Tishelle Logan and sponsored by Cayman National Bank.

The top four sides are slated to battle for the national championship while the bottom four clubs compete for the consolation trophy. Heading into this week, the 2012 standings see Roma A, RS, AS and Flames in the top four spots with All Stars B, Unity A, Rising Stars B and Unity B (who are 1-6) in the last four spots. Ernst and Young (0-4) and Roma B (0-6) are at the bottom.
