Although this is our 21st Business Expo we are always listening to our member feedback and striving to improve the whole Expo experience for both exhibitors and attendees. This has led us to change the venue for 2012 to the Arc at Camana Bay, which we hope will provide a more convenient setting for many of our members.
This venue move opens many more exciting opportunities for us as organisers and work has already begun on the revitalisation of this popular event with ideas such as a special Small Business section, a focus on the evolution of renewable energy and a GREEN Business section. If you have any of your own ideas for improving the Business Expo – tell us about them!
Also note that the previous advertised date has been updated to Thursday 25 to Saturday 27 October 2012 and the Chamber is offering an early bird special for those companies who sign-up before 1 July.
Story of the Expo:
In the late 1980s, the Chamber Council established a “Buy Caymanian” Committee to develop strategies to encourage consumers to purchase locally. Membership surveys determined that consumers were concerned mostly with prices, variety and quality of service.
It also revealed that many residents were unaware of the selection of products and services that were available locally.
The first “Business Fair” was held in 1992 at the Lions Centre. Wooden booth stalls were erected; 30 businesses participated. The event was designed to attract families and several activities were organised to allow as many small businesses as possible to showcase their products. Small business training seminars were organised as part of the event.
In 1995, the name of the event was changed to the Business Expo and there was greater emphasis placed on creating a business environment for selling products and services at the event rather than creating a “fair” atmosphere.
In 2008, the focus of the Expo was on technology and named “The Business & Technology Expo.” The theme for the event was GET CONNECTED–connecting business and technology providers – not only from a business to consumer perspective but also from business to business viewpoint.
It was the perfect time to showcase Cayman’s increasingly available technology and the transformation it offered local businesses and residents. It was at this point that the Expo was moved from the Lions Centre to an air conditioned and dry location, which allowed members with sensitive equipment/furniture to dust to participate that may not have been able to before.
In 2009 and 2010 the Business Expo focused on including as many Chamber member businesses as possible. Although the Expo did not continue with a particular theme, the opening ceremony was expanded to include an entertainment portion for the evening.
Many entrepreneurs have in the past and continue to use the Expo to launch their business such as: Icoa, Digicel, Netclues, Paradise Coffee, Silver Star Satellite, Sport N Zone, Mail Boxes Etc. and Rhino Linings just to name a few. In 2011, first-time exhibitor and new business Earthstrong, was a hit amongst the total of 40 businesses that participated.
Let your business enjoy the many benefits of the Chamber Business Expo, whether you’re a new or existing business we can help you find the spotlight you deserve.
