Local beach volleyball earned fresh kudos in Jamaica.
Cayman excelled at the University of the West Indies International 2012 Beach Volleyball Invitational. The female team of Cristin Alexander and Jennifer Bily would win the women’s segment while male duo Richard Campbell and Olney Thompson placed fourth.
Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation tournament director Fareed Hosein was on hand for the matches last weekend. He states Cayman have much to celebrate.
“Jamaica was a gracious host and the tournament was a success, especially as the Cayman Islands team of Cristin Alexander and Jennifer Bily brought back the gold and Olney Thompson and Richard Campbell finished just one place out of a medal,” Hosein said. “The volleyball federation was pleased to assist with the event, specifically through Curtis Richards and Keith Higgins’ attendance and most importantly continuing to promote the sport of volleyball in the Caribbean.
“Noel Williams, the volleyball federation president and Kennedy McGowan, the federation vice-president, donated equipment and fully supported the tournament as the federation has always had a strong relationship with volleyball in Jamaica.
“I would like to thank Cayman Airways as the title sponsor, Hotel Four Seasons Kingston and Bernie Bush, without whom the federation’s assistance would not have been possible.”
Bily and Alexander went 4-1 and were second in group play before defeating the Barbados pairing of Sharon Bovell and Pauline Woodroffe in the final. Thompson and Campbell were second in Pool A at 2-1 before losing to Shane Dwyer and Andre McLean of Jamaica (UWI A) in the consolation match.
