Rising Stars seek Zumba energy

Rising Stars want international kudos and are using a new avenue to achieve that.

The local netball club is putting on a Zumba Happy Hour fundraiser on Friday, 18 May, at 6.30-8pm. The Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts will serve as the venue with admission being $10 for adults and $5 for kids aged 5-13.

Proceeds from the event will finance the club’s Under-21 team and their trip to the United States of America Netball Association Championships in Delray Beach, Florida on 23-24 June. Rising Stars head coach Orvin Palacio states Zumba is a good way to get there.

“We have used other fundraising methods, like bake sales, Goal-a-Thon sheets and food sales, but this time we wanted to try something different,” Palacio said. “We know that persons like Zumba, including the members of our club, so we figured that it would be great to incorporate it. Zumba and netball are similar in that it is about fitness, movement and having a great time.”

For the record, Zumba is a Latin dance-inspired fitness programme created in Colombia during the 1990s. It involves dancing, aerobics, squats and lunges.

The netball championships in Florida take place at the Atlantic Community High School Gymnasium and is divided into various age groups. The American association is the governing body for the sport in the US and has been hosting the event for over five years.

Palacio states the club places a high priority on international tournaments.

“It is the mandate of our club to provide skill-building opportunities both locally and overseas for our members, especially our youth players. This year we have a large number of young girls registered on our team and we decided that this would be the ideal time to take a youth team abroad to gain this experience.

“Several of the girls have gone on trips with the club before, but it will be a new experience for some.”

News of the fundraiser comes as the club competes in the Cayman Islands Netball Association 2012 open league. Rising Stars A, behind Mariska Blackman, is competing for the national championship while the B squad, featuring Alexis Carias, is in contention for the plate/consolation title.
