Team Charterland are hoping history repeats itself.
The squad is competing in the Cayman Islands Basketball 2012 national men’s league division two finals against the Butterfield Shockwaves. Game one is slated for this Sunday, 27 May, at 5.30pm at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre.
Last season, both sides met in the finale, with Charterland sweeping aside the Shockwaves. In 2012, it has been all Charterland with Butterfield losing by 53, four and 32 points during the regular season.
Charterland swept the Rock Hole Fire Ants at Camana Bay this month, winning game one 80-76 and game two 89-72. A perfect 9-0 during the regular season, Charterland were propelled by Will Koutney, Ovaine Monteith (both had 21 points in game one) and Nathan Smith (21 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, four blocks in game two).
Rock Hole were a tough out behind Davion Foster (who had double-doubles in both games with 12.5 points and 10 rebounds on average), Maxwell Linwood (who averaged 15.5 points and five assists) and Daniel Garrard (averaging 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds).
Butterfield swept Titans in their first round encounter, with a 73-60 win in game one and a 74-70 victory in game two. A solid 5-4 during the regular season, Butterfield were guided in the playoffs by Peter Grant (averaging 21 points off three three-pointers, three steals, three assists), Darryl Paddyfoot (averaging 16 points, 20.5 rebounds) and Phillip Webb (averaging 14 points, 13 rebounds, three blocks).
Bruce Thompson was a one-man show for the Titans in game one (26 points, nine rebounds). In game two he had 12 points, seven rebounds with help from Kadane Hall (13 points, 14 rebounds), Kahlil Mellad (10 points) and Andre McFarlane (22 points) in game two.
Game two of the finals is slated for next Tuesday, 29 May, at 5.30pm at Camana Bay. Game three, if necessary, would be on Sunday, 3 June.
