Now that those silly people over in London have finished running around, jumping all over the place and getting all tired and flustered, it’s our chance to show what we’re capable of.
Yes, it’s the Beer Olympics at Margaritaville on Saturday, 18 August. “The Beer Olympics will be an exciting event filled with beer drinking challenges that will allow one lucky team to walk away with $600, gold medals and the championship trophy. The event will start at 7pm to accommodate other sporting events like flag football, netball or rugby games players to compete after in the Beer Olympics,” says Cedric Gidarisingh, who points out that Margaritaville encouraged all competitors to drink responsibly and assign a designated driver after the event. A sentiment we completely echo.
We have not-that-exhaustively researched events that are likely to be involved. Here’s an overview of a few.
A game in which players throw a ping pong ball across a table with the intent of landing the ball in a cup of beer on the other end. Each team then takes turns attempting to shoot ping pong balls into the opponent’s cups.
If a ball lands in a cup, then the contents of that cup are consumed by the other team. Weekender is really bad at this game.
We’re not sure, but this looks like it could be a variant on the drink-a-yard-of-beer thing which is really quite difficult to do. Here’s some trivia for you: Bob Hawke was famous for two things – being Aussie prime minister, and being able to drink a yard of beer in 11 seconds, which was once the world record. Awesome guy.
Two teams of an equal number of players stand on opposite sides of a table, facing one another. The players directly facing are opponents. In front of each teammate is a disposable plastic cup filled with a set amount of beer. When finished, the player who drank it attempts to flip the cup, by flicking or lifting the bottom until it flips and lands face down on the table, sitting on its mouth. That’s what she said.
We might be going out on a limb here, but we reckon this one involves drinking beer in some respect.
This is a game all about taking a certain drink every time designated events happen in the popular Will Ferrell news movie, which is absolutely not based on an accurate portrayal of what happens behind the scenes at Cayman 27. Don’t be silly.
Have fun, be safe and head to Margaritaville for a registration form. Each team has four players and the fee is $40 per team. On the night, team sign in is by 6pm.
First prize is $600 cash, second prize a case of Bud Light each and third prize a $200 bar tab. An award ceremony involving gold, silver and bronze plus overall winner trophies follows the completion of all events.
Needless to say you must be over 18 to be involved. And, seriously, take your friend Des the Designated Driver, walk or split a taxi home, chaps.
