Cowboys stun New York in opener

The Cayman Islands is officially experiencing pigskin excitement.

The 2012-2013 NFL season got off to a dramatic start on Wednesday night as the Dallas Cowboys defeated the New York Giants 24-17 in the opener. Tony Romo and company got the better of their National Football Conference East rivals thanks to a balanced offensive attack, a rejuvenated defence and a Giants secondary that left much to be desired.

Based on their respective schedules, both clubs look in line to sport a winning record by week seven. How Eli Manning and the reigning Super Bowl champs fare after that will depend on how well their division rivals play.

Both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins will be in action this Sunday, 9 September, at 12noon Cayman time on FOX. The Eagles battle the Cleveland Browns in what should be a Philly blowout while the Redskins seem destined to fall short to the New Orleans Saints. Those contests are two of 15 matches taking place over the weekend.

Sunday’s top match-ups figure to be the Buffalo Bills against the New York Jets at 12noon on CBS, the San Francisco 49ers tackling the Green Bay Packers at 3.25pm on FOX and the Pittsburgh Steelers battling the Denver Broncos at 7.20pm on NBC. Mark Sanchez and his anaemic Jets offence could falter to an improved Bills defence, the Niners look poised to bottle up Aaron Rodgers and the Packers and Peyton Manning could get roughed up en route to a tough win over the Steelers.

Monday Night Football returns on ESPN next Monday, 10 September, with an interesting double-header. Andy Dalton’s Cincinnati Bengals will be competitive but figure to be outclassed by Ray Rice’s Baltimore Ravens at 6pm. At 9.15pm, Philip Rivers should be able to propel his San Diego Chargers to victory over Carson Palmer’s Oakland Raiders.
