The Wednesday Night Running Club, started by Tony ‘Geezer’ Watts is almost four years old and in that time has gone from a tiny band of runners to a sizeable crowd.
Many of them have been in the Fidelity Fun Run series which wraps up with its third and last run this Saturday morning.
Once the Fidelity runs are over it will be time to renew old rivalries with their own Wednesday night race series, to determine the club champion and keeper of the Jim Kelly Trophy for another year.
It is the only time handicap race on the island and the slowest of the slow has as much chance of winning as the fastest runners.
This year there will be three races on consecutive Wednesdays. The best two finishes will count so competitors don’t need to do all three. As previously the races will be over 5km and run as a time handicap, fastest runners start last.
Anyone can enter, even non-club members who have never been before, but to be officially in the handicap and have a chance of winning it is for members who register. “That means you’ve been running on a Wednesday with us at least once and you tell me you’ll most likely be turning up,” said Watts. “The handicap races are on 10, 17 and 24 October. We will present the trophy the following Wednesday at a local venue.” There is a post-run social this Wednesday, 19 September.
