Fidelity record could melt again

The Fidelity Fun Run series has been the best attended in its long history and when it wraps up this weekend, another record could be set.

Over 200 have joined in the two-mile run from John Gray High School, Walkers Road, each of the last two Saturdays and when for the final race another sizeable crowd is certain.

The fact that newcomer Dominic Corbin has narrowly beaten perennial champ Marius Acker adds to the interest. From elite athletes to walking grannies, mums with pushchairs and dog lovers, all types are welcome for the race that starts at 7.30am.

Fidelity’s Tom Gammage has been the chief organiser. He even runs it as well and is usually an early finisher. Last week he doubled back to encourage wife Jo to beat 19 minutes, which she did with two seconds to spare.

“We are delighted with the turnout as both weeks were a record attendance for the Fun Run series,” Gammage said. “I think it was around 225 last Saturday.

“It would be great if we did have a record crowd this time although a similar attendance to the previous weeks would still be good.”

He is hoping for up to 250.

“We’ve been fortunate that the weather has been good so far, although still fairly warm even at that time of the morning. It looked earlier in the week that there might have been a storm headed our way this weekend but thankfully that has now dissipated so we are hoping for good conditions again.

“The feedback has been very positive. The two mile distance means that it is achievable for participants of all abilities and I think a lot of people like the fact that it is held over three consecutive weeks so that they can see themselves improving from week to week.

“We have also tried to keep the series affordable and I think that has helped to keep the numbers up.”
