The Estella Scott-Roberts Foundation presents A Night under the Stars on Saturday, 13 October, at Sunset Bay. It will be an evening of entertainment, wine, food and remembrance to raise awareness and discuss what the foundation has achieved over the past year.
The foundation was created on 31 October, 2008, and will be recognising its fourth year as a licensed, nonprofit company in the Cayman Islands this month. The objectives of the foundation are as follows:
To advocate for a life free of violence for all
To carry out activities to facilitate the empowerment of women, men and children
To advocate for and support equality for women and girls in all areas of life
To support policies and research projects that further the aim of gender equality
To do all other acts or things necessary, advisable or desirable for the advancement of women’s issues
The evening begins at 8pm and tickets can be purchased in advance from any LIME store or at the door. They are $35 each, and offer the chance to win an Apple iPhone. The draw will be done later on the night of the event.
The entertainment includes music and live artistry. There will also be a wine tasting and Estella remembrance lanterns to recognise the work and life of this incredible woman.
A silent auction will be running throughout the evening, so make sure to take your chequebook so you can bid on the items. In fact, you can get there early and take advantage of the complimentary nibbles being served between 8pm and 9pm, which will also give you time to peruse the silent auction at your leisure.
Over the last 12 months the foundation has been busy raising awareness through numerous events, programmes and fundraisers. The Steps to End Silence Walk was held in April and saw hundreds of people walking to recognise Sexual Assault Awareness Month. There was also a literary competition on the subject that same month open to all persons older than 15 living in the Cayman Islands, again to promote awareness of a subject that has unfortunately been considered taboo for too long.
Since the early 1990s, the month of April has been internationally recognised as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This is a time when organisations worldwide, such as the Estella Scott-Roberts Foundation, strive to raise public awareness about sexual violence, as well as inform the community on how to prevent it and inspire action to make positive changes. In December 2011 the annual Mistletoe Party at Abacus raised funds for the foundation and it will do so again this year on 21 December. People are urged to mark this date on their calendar and come together in the festive season whilst supporting an excellent cause.
A Night under the Stars has been created to bring together supporters of the foundation and hopefully introduce newcomers to its work. The only way to keep people aware is for the foundation to grow and get its message out through events such as this.
Sunset Bay is at 500 Old Prospect Road.
