Colombian carpenter lends expertise to T.H.E. Merren Design

T.H.E. Merren Design opened for business in 2011, and offers fine carpentry services to the Cayman Islands.

The owners, Helen and Edlin Merren, have hired experienced carpenter Ludwin Rojas Silva, born in Capitanejo, Santander, Colombia.

Ludwin is the son of Colombian furniture maker Luis Antonio Rojas, who made furniture in Capitanejo using a wide variety of woods, such as cedar, oak, mahogany and teak.

Ludwin, being blessed with hands on experience by working with his father from a young age, acquired the prized skills of a fine carpenter.

In Colombia, Ludwin observed his father carry out the entire process of making furniture, including cutting down the trees and preparing the wood, as opposed to being provided with pre-made timber.

His attention to detail is evident in the clean lines of his installations.

“When I renovated my boat, I hired Ludwin and he did a superb job on the interior wood work and cabinets”  said Gregory Merren.

Since arriving in Cayman, Ludwin has built and installed custom staircases, hand rails, magnificent hard wood doors, cabinets, furniture, floors, crown moulding, trim, wood shutters, fences, gates, signs, mirrors and frames for artwork, and even boat interiors.

Those who have worked with Ludwin are more than impressed with both his craftsmanship, and his professionalism.

“In my dealings with Ludwin I have found him to be discerning, precise and professional,” said Mr. Burns Conolly, AIA, Managing Director at the Burns Conolly Group. “His love for his trade is apparent and his work is suburb.

“Ludwin loves what he does and he does it exceedingly well. His attention to detail and his patience to get it right is obviously a lifelong trait. Ludwin’s quiet demeanor is constant throughout a project and he is more than happy to meet even the most difficult deadlines”

Ludwin appreciates the diversity of styles and designs of the projects in the Cayman Islands and is excited about the new venture.

“The efficient importation process in the Cayman Islands is a major contributing factor in our success and in getting the desired wood and materials required to make our cabinets, staircases, doors, shutters,” says Ludwin.

“The designs of children’s bedrooms with individual workspaces are gaining popularity, and I can engage the child in the design, layout, material and colour of the projects.”

The main objective of T.H.E. Merren Design is to provide a high quality service and superior finished product to all customers..

“Ludwin is just brilliant and most delightful to work with having a sound understanding of the design I was looking for.  The finished wall unit was impeccably done, so much so that I have no hesitation recommending him to another customer” said Sean Power.
