Inaugural Web awards a success

Cayman’s dive industry gathered for a special underwater video awards and Diver Industry Person ball.

The winners of an 11-week-long video contest were announced on the night, which was well-attended, said sponsors idive Cayman.

“The Diver Industry Person group is all about organising our islands’ water sports community from the ground up,” said Douglas Cameron of Caybrew.

“It was created in part by James Mansfield of Cayman Islands Brewery and Michael Scott Chambers of Obar, honestly to sell beer, but now has become the best tool to get this group working together on our island.”

The idive website was launched in October to provide an application for smart phones that showcases Cayman’s dive sites.

“The event showcased the winning underwater videos from this contest, but it came with the heavy message that we need to protect our living ocean that we depend on in so many ways,” said an idive spokesman.

This was the first year of the contest. The team from Dive Industry Person and idive Cayman said that they planned to have it as their annual event. Next year there will be a new category of Best Short Story, added the organisers.

The winners were:

Most Outrageous video – Luigi Moxam and Cabana crew

Info min Documentary – Olli Dubock

Extreme – Jeffery James

Idive video of the Year – Ryan Cowen

Mr. Cowen’s speech was poignant, felt organisers, as he has an ear issue that has temporarily put an end to his diving experiences. They wished him well for the “year or two it will take to heal.” Mr. Cowen left the island the day after the ceremony.
