Deguzmans want another Mouse

The latest Mickey Mouse champions have their sights set on more glory.

Eugene and Rosyl Deguzman dominated the recent Mickey Mouse Pirates Week darts tournament. The husband and wife duo state they intend to duplicate their efforts next year.

“I was so excited for the Mickey Mouse tournament,” Eugene said. “It was my motivation for playing darts. I kept on practicing and that’s why I got it. Every day I throw, maybe next year I’ll win, maybe not.”

“I need to practice more, maybe I’ll win next year,” Rosyl said. “I can see it getting harder and harder because everyone, especially in the Filipino community, plays every day.

“Of course I want to defend my title. Every night after work I throw.”

Eugene would emerge the overall men’s winner by beating 2011 champion Jasper Esguerra at Mango Tree. Rosyl earned the women’s title by defeating Miriam Rodriguez in the final. It would be her second straight women’s title after downing Michelle Terry last year.

Rosyl is quick to mention that of the two, Miriam deserves the most props.

“Miriam is the best, like my husband I’m lucky to win too. It was really a tough game. Though I won, Miriam is the best on the Island. It was all luck.”

The other winners were Earl Smith and Ritchie Bernaldo, who beat out Cayman Islands Darts Association President Paul Anglin and playing partner Cliff Weeks in the doubles category.

Anglin previously stated that the turnout of 44 players was higher than normal for the tournament and the competition had to be extended beyond the Pirates Week time frame.

With the annual Vivian Rankine Memorial darts tournament recently wrapping up, focus in the sport now shifts on league play. The 2012-2013 national league is getting under way with the monthly Cayman versus Philippines competition in full swing.
