His eight books and four TV shows prove he knows food, but it’s his irreverent voice and sincere interest in the human ingredients behind the dishes that make readers and viewers fervently wish to be his travel companion. Shorts or rolled up trousers are de rigueur as Eric Ripert, Anthony Bourdain and José Andrés grill in the water at a literal Caribbean Sea cookout. The gilding of this tropical lily: cocktails made with the ultra-premium tequilas and liquors of Patrón.

The creator of Cayman Cookout invites you to the quintessential island burger bash with assistance at the grill from “Top Chef’s” own burger maestro. The morning begins with a catamaran sail across North Sound and stop to snorkel and swim at Eric’s favourite place on Cayman: Stingray City. Then on to Rum Point for satisfying burgers of every iteration along with shallow waters, reaching docks, shaded shores, swinging hammocks, candy-coloured picnic tables, sparkling wine, cold Heineken and, of course, rum, courtesy of Tortuga. Recommended attire: swimsuits, cover-ups and plenty of sunscreen.

To purchase a ticket without Catamaran transport, please contact The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

Location: Cayman Islands Ballroom, The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman

The annual competition for Cayman’s own amateur “Top Chef”. Spike Mendelsohn hosts the knife-wielding victors of a series of preliminary competitions. Their Caribbean-influenced dishes are judged by Eric Ripert, Anthony Bourdain, José Andrés and Cayman Islands Governor Duncan Taylor, while guests enjoy a lavish brunch and Taittinger Champagne.

The Cayman Cookout 2013 looks set to be the perfect start to the New Year, so good in fact that here in Weekender towers we have re-designated 1 February as the official Day of Resolutions.

That’s because the quality of the events coming up is so extraordinary that we want to give ourselves every opportunity to revel in the world-class epicurean fare.

Even more than this, we’re looking to Santa to bring us tickets to the event as special gifts. Organisers at The Ritz-Carlton tell us that whether it’s an individual event ticket or for several events, people of Cayman and further afield are snapping up tickets as very special Christmas presents for loved ones. Sounds a brilliant idea, doesn’t it? What could be better to wake up on Christmas morning than to find an envelope with your name on it – like Wonka’s golden ticket except way better because there’s little to no chance of you turning into a giant fruit or floating off in a bubble of air at the Cookout.

Cayman Cookout is an exquisite shock to the senses – a tropical experience of talented chefs, amazing food and island attitude. We’re thrilled to participate in this extraordinary showcase of culinary skill, and look forward to highlighting the unique island cuisine of our Grand Cayman partners.

Red Sail Sports

The Rum Point Restaurant and Bar & Grill are pleased to partner with their sister company Red Sail Sports for the ‘Burgers in Paradise‘ event of the Cayman Cook out. This opportunity blends perfectly with the unique ability we have as Grand Cayman’s most complete Watersports operator and Group Destination Management Service provider to combine the islands most popular tourism experiences, Stingray Sandbar, luxury sailboats and Rum Point, in one all inclusive day excursion.

Flava Magazine

Flava, Cayman’s culinary magazine, is proud to be a sponsor of Cayman Cookout 2013. “Our magazine was only launched last year so this is a first time sponsorship for us although Cayman Free Press have been on board with the Cookout from day one” said Marketing Supervisor Anne Guerrero. “It is a great event to showcase local talent alongside world established names in the culinary world. Flava magazine and its readers are looking forward to celebrating the epicurean genius of this world-class event.”

Of course, not everyone can attend all of those events so we’ve selected some special ones that are also very local-friendly – remember the Cayman Cookout is geared not just toward our visitors but central to the ethos is the truism that Cayman is the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean and those of us who are fortunate to live here should also get the opportunity to embrace that fact.
