Course to focus on workplace violence

An international expert will be in the Cayman Islands this week to talk to businesses about combating violence in the workplace.

Carol Fredrickson, who runs the United States-based company Violence Free, will lead a series of workshops Wednesday, 6 March, at the University College of the Cayman Islands.

Business leaders and human resources managers are among the target audience for the seminar, which has been organised by the Grand Cayman-based business Training and Safety Tutor.

Edris Ocho, who runs the business, said the event would focus on the duties and obligations of business regarding workplace violence. He said the issue was an important topic worldwide, but had not really been discussed in Cayman.

“My motivation for this is prevention,” Mr. Ocho said. “We need to be proactive and anticipate problems. There is a trend of workplace violence worldwide and we need to look at this as a preventative measure.

“It is really to ensure that each organisation has practices and protocols in place that include management of workplace violence,” he added.

Mr. Ocho said it was important for businesses to have policies in place and to know their responsibilities and liabilities when it comes to handling conflicts in the workplace.

He said Ms Fredrickson was a world renowned expert on the subject and had been consulted by major media organisations such as USA Today and NBC to tap her expertise in the wake of deadly shootings in the US.

Originally from Canada, she spent 15 years in law enforcement specialising in emergency services and disaster preparedness.

In a flyer for the event, she promises to “keep audiences on the edge of their seats with stranger than fiction case studies and worst case scenarios pulled from hundreds of real life violent workplace satiations”.

She said the programme will include an analysis of the cost of workplace violence to companies’ bottom lines and details of how to recognise threats and deal with them appropriately.

The workshop runs from 8.30am to 4.30pm and costs $450 per person. For more information, e-mail [email protected] or call 327-6609.
