Basketball made a great assist as March honours females in sports.
The Cayman Islands Department of Sports recently held an Honouring Women’s Month showcase, in conjunction with the Women of Valour basketball club, at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. The event attracted dozens of girls ages 6 to 11.
Rochel Gardener, 15, has been in the sport for six years and is a member of Women of Valour. She said the event is about the future of Cayman basketball.
“It’s very important because eventually, we’ll be too old for the Under-16, U-19 and women’s competitions,” Gardener said. “It’s a good thing Women of Valour head coach Redver Ebanks is getting the girls into the sport at such a young age. When we leave, they can carry it on.”
Gardener was among many notable basketball talents who came out last Saturday. Women of Valour members Chloe Powery and April Ebanks were joined by the likes of Cassianne Lawrence and Peter Grant.
One of the noteworthy participants was Little League starlet Reyah Stewart. Gardener said youngsters such as Stewart have the makings of competent players.
“They’re fast, willing to learn, willing to do whatever they are told to do,” she said. “I’m confident this same group can go far.”
The Department of Sports has a full slate of activities to honour women this month. Up next is a U-9 football showcase, in conjunction with the Cayman Islands Football Association women’s programme, at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex football field this Saturday, 16 March, from 9am to 1pm.
Next week, Emma Hollis, Great Britain’s Paralympian world record holder and five-time European medallist, conducts motivational speeches to students at Clifton Hunter and John Gray high schools. The highlight of her visit will be her participation in the Camana Bay Aquatic Club 800 metre swim on Saturday, 23 March, at Governor’s Beach starting at 3pm.
