East End served up smashing fun

The first ever Tennis 10s event held in East End was played last week.

There was a large turnout over the two days with more than 20 Caymanian children showing up to participate in the Cayman National Tennis 10s competition, with roughly half being girls.

“We were delighted with the enthusiasm shown by all of the participants and very impressed with the skills on display over the weekend,” said Noel Watkins of Cayman Tennis Academy who ran the event. “It is evident that the standard of tennis in East End has improved significantly over the past year as the kids are deriving benefit from their weekly lessons.”

Ethana Villalobos took the top spot, followed closely by Steven John Montero and Frank Williams.

Richard Harrison of the Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands said: “The federation thanks Noel Watkins and Alec Sandys of Cayman Tennis Academy for running the tournament and volunteer Joel Mancenido.

“With Cayman National’s continued support the tennis 10s programme, which is free, is now going Island-wide which has always been the vision and we want to make it a permanent fixture in all the districts.”

The next event is on 20 April at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman before one in North Side in May.
