The Irish Jog always attracts a huge crowd and the latest staging of it two weeks ago was no exception.
A total of 1,058 participants joined in the 5K race and walk this year and the money raised for the Sunrise Adult Training Centre was $10,838.
The annual St. Patrick’s Day 5K Irish Jog was around the Britannia Golf Course and was co-sponsored by Butterfield Bank and Grand Cayman Beach Suites. This was its 21st staging.
Cayman Free Press computer technician Dominic Corbin won in a time of 17 minutes, 28 seconds, way ahead of the second placed Greg Meaker. Leslie Daley was amongst the fastest women to finish in an event more about fun than competition. The Irish Jog mascot was there again to entertain everyone and many warmed to the Irish theme in honour of St Patrick’s Day on 17 March.
Corbin said: “I knew this run was more about having fun, taking part and raising money for a good cause. So I didn’t take the racing side seriously. Although on occasions I was tempted to try and beat the golf cart I was following.
“As it was my first time running the course, it was hard to gauge if the time was good. But I was pleased because it’s a very bendy course and my long legs couldn’t really get into their stride.
“I was really impressed with the turn out. It’s great to see the community getting active and raising money for a good cause.
“I’m not sure what my next run will be in Cayman as I’m off island for a while and doubt I’ll run again in Cayman until July.”
