Emma dazzles for Green Light

After two close victories over the past week, Green Light has a strong hold on first place in the standings in Cayman Islands Little League Girls Softball.

Late last month, Green Light defeated a much improved Al La Kebab team 5-3. The game was a defensive battle and hits were hard to come by for both teams. Green Light’s Emma Conolly drove in Alexis McDonald and Abi Onfroy with a first inning double and she finished the game with three Runs Batted In.

Alisha Forbes (Al La Kebab) and Kristi Welds (Green Light) both had dominant pitching performances.

In the end, Green Light did just enough to hold on for the close victory as Welds struck out the final hitter. Coincidently, it was the third consecutive game between the two teams that ended up in a two-run victory for Green Light.

The other game saw Island Cleaners taking on Global Captive Management. Island Cleaners had clobbered GCM in their two previous meetings, but the GCM girls came out determined. Alikie Kandler scored three runs and pitched her best game of the season, limiting the powerful Island Cleaners line-up to just three runs on the night as GCM registered a 9-3 victory.

Last Wednesday, the game between Island Cleaners and Green Light was a tight contest all the way to the dramatic conclusion. Island Cleaners’ Samantha Cridland fired in a good pitch and with one tremendous swing, Emma Conolly blasted a towering drive to left centre field for a game-ending home run! The final tally was 9-8 for Green Light. This is the first time ever that a Cayman Islands Little League girls game has ended with a home run over the fence.

The other contest on 1 May couldn’t match the same level of drama, but Al La Kebab played a solid game in defeating GCM 12-8. Al La Kebab began with tremendous confidence, scoring two in the first and six in the second to take an early 8-0 lead.

Leading Al La Kebab were Alisha Forbes, who scored three runs, and team mates Chauntae Martinez, Kacie Ramos, Lashae Ebanks and Hannah Welcome, who scored two runs each.

The next round of games are on Friday, 10 May, and Saturday, 11 May.

The public is reminded that Little Leaguers are currently selling tickets for the annual “Continue the Dream” fundraiser, which takes place on Saturday, 1 June. Tickets are only $10 and the top prize is $10,000 cash.
