Juliana joins PPM

Former Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly has joined the People’s Progressive Movement, the third party in which she has served in six months.

Governor Duncan Taylor revealed that the Sister Islands’ elected representative, who will be the next Speaker of the House, had joined the PPM in his announcement Tuesday of the official appointment of Alden McLaughlin as premier of the Cayman Islands.

“I was today informed that the Hon. Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, MLA, JP has joined the People’s Progressive Movement. This, in effect, gives the PPM a majority of seats in the Legislative Assembly,” said Mr. Taylor. “I subsequently received a recommendation from all the elected members of that party as to who they would wish to be appointed Premier.”

He said that in line with their recommendation, and under Section 49 (2) of the Constitution, he had appointed Mr. McLaughlin, as premier of the Cayman Islands. “I would like to congratulate the new Premier on his appointment,” the governor added.

Up until December, Ms O’Connor-Connolly had been a member of the United Democratic Party and deputy premier of the Cayman Islands. The UDP then split when the party leader McKeeva Bush was ousted as premier by a vote of the majority of the Legislative Assembly, including five members of the UDP, who went on to form the People’s National Alliance.

Those five members of the PNA – Ms O’Connor-Connolly who took on the role of premier, Mark Scotland, Rolston Anglin, Cline Glidden and Dwayne Seymour – ran in the 22 May election, but the only member of that party the electorate returned to office was Ms O’Connor-Connolly.

The PPM is scheduled to hold a press conference at 6pm today, Tuesday, to reveal the make-up of its Cabinet.

  1. This only goes to show that this woman will do whatever she has to do to, say whatever she has to say and feign loyalty to whomever she has to to guarantee herself a place at the trough..I can’t WAIT til your former party members start spilling the beans in the wake of your continued betrayal..and PPM leadership, is this what you think you have to do to ensure your party leads?? How could you even CONSIDER having this flip flopper in your midst??

  2. I have been reserving my comments to give the PPM time get their plans rolling and see what they do to make things better. Shucking and Jiving certainly seem to go a long way in Caymans Political landscape and some folks seem to be only loyal to who is going to sign their next check. I am sure she got or has been promised a lot to do this. Hopefully for her it doesn’t backfire on her in the long run..

I am anxiously watching to see the PPM’s plans and promises start to materialize after listening to them do nothing but bash everyone else’s ideas and plans for the last 4 years. Well it’s their turn now so I hope and pray for Caymans sake that they live up to everyone’s expectations. If they do I will be the first to say I was wrong about Alden with my opinion that he is all talk and no action without a clue or care as to what’s best for Cayman. In a way this will be a good learning experience for me about Caymanian politics, I was able to watch the UDP in action under Bush for 4 years and now I get to watch the PPM in action under Alden for the next 4 years.

  3. SMH #Justsaying The next 4 years in the Cayman Islands is going to be interesting and very turbulent under the helm of Premier Alden and the Red PPM Government.

Juliana joining PPM, this comes as no shock to me. This woman has proven that she is not trust worthy. I am glad that she got the speaker of the house, she will be safe for the next 4 years with a salary and thus she crossed over, I hope for your sake this doesn’t backfire on you.

    I believe in KARMA!!

  4. Praying4Cayman – The contents of your posts seem to belie your pious title. The campaign is over. The people have spoken. We have a new, inclusive govt. Rather than uttering prophecies of doom and gloom and speaking evil of those whom we dislike, why don’t we as the people of Cayman come together for the good this country? Forget about Red and Green and Purple and whatever else.

  5. @Speaker The campaign is over but the storm is just brewing and it will be a long rough haul.

As for speaking of evil I am just speaking the truth and it seems like you are not paying full attention.

It is my democratic right to say whatever I want to say and the same for you.

  6. Rorschach – The PPM did what they had to in the circumstances that the C4C and joined forces with the two Independent members and were making unreasonable demands for power. They had 3 choices: (a) give in to their demands and essentially overturn the will of the electorate; (b)call for new elections; or (c) invite Mrs. O’Connor-Connolly to join them and be appointed as Speaker. Which would you have chosen?
