Containing hundreds of stunning photographs by Yves-Jacques Rey-Millet and text by Patricia Bradley, the newly revised edition of “A Photographic Guide to the Birds of the Cayman Islands”, provides full photographic coverage of every species on the Cayman Islands list.
It’s being celebrated with a special book signing on Saturday, 8 June, at West Indies Wine Company in Camana Bay from 5.30 to 8pm.
The book, we’re told, features concise text for each species including identification, similar species, voice, habitats and behaviour, status and distribution. This guide is an essential companion for anyone living or visiting the beautiful Cayman Islands, says Danielle Vernon of the National Trust of the Cayman Islands.
Get your signed copy for $30, she advises, with all proceeds going to the National Trust’s environmental and historic conservation work.
Oh and there’s complimentary hors d’oeuvres and happy hour pricing, too, which is a bonus.
Cook it up
On Wednesday, 12 June another National Trust Cooking Class Soiree takes place. This one’s at Ortanique and is billed as “On the Grill”, in the company of Sara Mair and Cindy Huston of the restaurant. It runs from 6 to 9pm.
Guests will be treated to an intensely flavourful cuisine that has been inspired by the sun and the sea, Danielle tells us.
Self-taught Chef/Owner of Ortanique, Cindy Hutson has been titled “Chef of the Year by Chef Magazine in 2011” and “Chef of the Year by Eaters in 2013”. Chef Sara Mair is best known for appearing in “Top Chef 3: Miami” and has worked her way up through the kitchen alongside cooking greats.
Both special guest chefs, we gather, will dazzle and delight your palate by creating dishes using traditional Caribbean ingredients in an innovative way and exciting all five of your senses by concentrating on the wonderful flavour combinations of fruits, vegetables and traditional tropical seasonings.
The menu is as follows:
Fresh Catch Ceviche
With local scotch bonnets & citrus juices
West Indian Curried Crab Cakes
Jerk Chicken Penne Pasta
National Trust members $30, Nonmembers $35. All guests will receive recipe packets to take home. To make reservations, please contact [email protected]
