Stingray Award nominees set

The annual Stingray Awards is run by the Cayman Islands Tourism Association in order to recognise excellence within the industry.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the awards, which take place at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman on Tuesday, 25 June.

In 2004, three years after the formation of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association, a group of elected board members realised that the tourism industry in Cayman was unfortunately an unsung hero, said Joann Dinan on behalf of the association.

“Despite being a pillar of economic development for the islands, the tourism industry had no real way of recognising its stars, like the hard working front desk agent who repeatedly assisted guests time and time again with a smile or the eccentric divemaster that patiently and energetically instructed each new novice diver on their first dive at the wall,” she said.

There was also the tireless cook faithfully, and happily, preparing meals for her coworkers for more than 20 years and many more unrecognised, but important employees. Thus, the Stingray Awards were born.

The award itself, symbolised by a cobalt blue hand-blown glass stingray, is said to perfectly capture the essence of the Cayman Islands and the crystal clear waters that surround them.

Now, 10 years later, another elite group of 48 distinguished professionals will be recognised for their talents and dedication, said executive director Jane van der Bol.

“The members and sponsors of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association believe that the outstanding hospitality demonstrated by these nominees deserves to be noticed. Each of these individuals contributes to the Cayman Islands tourism product.

“[The association] thanks the event sponsors of this event for their continued support: The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and Celebrations Ltd.”

Ms van der Bol said that the association welcomed friends, family and colleagues of these nominees to attend and celebrate the success of these top performers on Tuesday, 25 June at The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman.

The price per ticket is $90 or $850 for a table of 10. These can be purchased online, by emailing [email protected] or calling the association at 949-8522. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.
