Cayman’s national gymnastics team has been announced.
Morgan and Jessica Lloyd, Haley Willkom, Bethany Dikau and Hilary Cockhill will bear the Cayman crest competing against rival island nations this month at the Island Games in Bermuda.
The girls performed alongside Cayman’s finest gymnasts for a local audience recently at the Gymnastics Extravaganza at Motions Unlimited. Governor Duncan Taylor, who took time out to show his support, presented plaques and personally congratulated each team member on their accomplishment after the Cayman Islands Gymnastics Association announced the 2013 team.
National team coach Kelley Paz states the girls have shown the dedication necessary to do well.
“This young team has demonstrated commitment and dedication in preparing for these Games and it was an honour to have the support of the governor and local fans at this event,” Paz said.
The Extravaganza was the final competition for the Cayman team before they depart for the Island Games on Friday, 12 July. They will continue to train every day, making final adjustments and polishing routines.
Among the competing gymnasts, Cockhill might be in the best form. She represented her school, Wycombe Abbey, at the British Schools National Championships in June. Cockhill, 14, posted a spectacular result on vault with a 15.0 and Wycombe, a boarding school in England, placed just out of the medals with an impressive team score of 118.45.
