Baseball’s biggest summer spectacle is taking place in New York.
The MLB Home Run Derby and All-Star Game are slated for Citi Field in Queens, the home of the New York Mets, this week. Sluggers aim for the fences on Monday, 15 July, at 7pm Cayman time on ESPN with the 84th edition of the All-Star Game on Tuesday, 16 July, from 6.30pm on Fox.
The Chevrolet Home Run Derby should not be lacking in long balls and star power. Reigning homer king Prince Fielder of the Detroit Tigers leads a strong American League side featuring former Derby winner Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees. Hometown hero David Wright of the Mets steadies the National League squad.
For the All-Star Game, both leagues will square with home field advantage in the World Series at stake. The American League team features a host of big names in Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers, David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox, Mariano Rivera of the Yankees, who is making his final appearance and Justin Verlander of the Tigers.
On the National League side, Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds, Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants, Cliff Lee of the Philadelphia Phillies and Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers will be among the stars.
Heading into the All-Star break, the standings show Boston leading the AL East, Detroit topping the AL Central and the Oakland Athletics pacing the AL West. The Atlanta Braves are well out in front of the NL East, the St. Louis Cardinals sit atop the NL Central and the Arizona Diamondbacks rank first in the NL West.
