CUC swim attracts electric fast world beaters again

The 25th annual CUC 800 meters swim starts at Public Beach and ends at Governor’s Beach this weekend.

It is on Saturday, Oct. 12, 4 p.m. start and registration is from 3-3:45 p.m.

Fees are $10 for children and $15 for adults for Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association members, and $5 more for each if non-members.

There is a swim cap and T-shirt for every participant and trophies for the first three in each age group.

Subway sandwiches and refreshments for all will be available after.

Cayman’s two-time Olympian Brett Fraser and two other USA swimmers – Rex Tulius and Michael Vernoia – both of whom were in last year’s U.S. Olympic trials, will be competing. They will be autographing after the 25th anniversary swim for sponsorship.

Goodie bags from CUC will be given out as well.

Last year 142 swimmers took part. Shaune Fraser, Brett’s brother, was first home in 10 minutes, 42 seconds. First female finisher was Danielle Boothe in 12:21.

Leading the pack from the start were the Frasers and Stingray Swim Club’s Alex McCallum, closely followed by Iain McCallum, Simon Butler and coach Darren Mew.

For those on the shoreline, the top three finishers provided an exciting race to the end, with Shaune finishing just ahead of Alex McCallum in 10:43 and Brett in 10:53. Boothe finished in an impressive 11th place overall.
