Punchers perfectly poised for world title bids

Cayman’s top amateur boxers Tafari Ebanks and Kendall Ebanks are at the World Amateur Championships this week in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

From Owen Roberts International Airport, they had a long journey to the biannual event in the eastern European outpost. They are accompanied by coaches Norman Wilson and Nayon “Donie” Anglin, who are steeped in boxing experience at top level in international competitions.

The fighters have had great preparation for these championships, having fought at the Americas Championships in Chile last month and also at the recent Cayman vs Cuba event in front of their home fans at the Lions Center.

As a final tune-up, Elite Marble & Granite stepped in to fund a training camp for the young Caymanians in Cuba, where they were for two weeks.

Mike Laurenson and Tommy Duffy from Elite Marble & Granite gave the quartet a good send off at the airport.

Tafari competes in the featherweight 56kg weight class and Kendall is in the light-welter 64kg division.

The Cayman Islands Boxing Association is grateful for the support of the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee, which has helped make this possible, providing more than $10,000 to cover costs.
