Last year, the Blazers came up painfully short of a netball championship.
The mixed league contenders were unbeaten before losing to Rising Stars in the finals. In 2013, Blazers would overcome that hurdle to win the overall crown, beating the Stars 21-16 on Wednesday. The match served as the title game for this year’s Camana Bay Summer Mixed League, put on by the Cayman Islands Netball Association.
Richard Allen served as Center for the Blazers and said the contest was a rugged affair.
“We knew it would be a hard game going in,” Allen said. “The game changed when Rising Stars made a switch we didn’t expect when they had Collin Anglin at Goal Keeper instead of Goal Shooter. But we defended and attacked well. The first half was a toss-up and in the second half we stepped up. In the third quarter, Rising Stars came back up on us.
“But the second half was decided by Gavin Watts making good shots and our GK Wrendon Timothy playing good for us, especially in the last quarter. Our Wing Attack Katherine Maw also played well and hard all the time. On the whole, everyone did their part for the victory.” Like any good final, it was a close contest. Blazers went up 4-2 in the first quarter before winning the second period 8-5. The Stars would claim the third 7-3 before Blazers rallied back with a 6-2 edge in the fourth quarter. Blazers got good performances from Tishelle Logan at Goal Attack and Courtney Wisdom at Center while Martika Williams at Goal Defense and Goal Shooter Travis Barnes stood out for Rising Stars.
Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Center saw three other matches to decide the runners-up. Unity ended up third by defeating Mixers, 10-4, and the Ernst and Young Sunbeams, 11-5. Sunbeams finished fourth after beating Mixers, 8-7.
