From time to time, the Caymanian Compass will publish archival photos of the Cayman Islands by George Nowak, aka Barefoot Man. The undated photo above is of Capt. Callan Ritch. In 1945, the U.S. government commended Mr. Ritch for sailing an American ship from New Guinea to San Francisco after it was attacked by Kamikaze pilots. Capt. Ritch died at age 79 in 1992 in Cayman Brac.

  1. Wouldn’t it be nice to place every Capt who came from Cayman somewhere like the turtle farm plus some of the ships they sailed and adventures they went through .How about old pictures of what it took to build a Sailing vessel . Things like that I believe would interest tourists.
What did we contribute to WW1 and WW2, would be nice also. History of our forefathers is very important for generations to come and see. They should be our role models for our youths.
