Porter vaults to scholarship

Camerin Porter is the proud recipient of the first scholarship awarded by the Cayman Islands Gymnastics Association.

Only 7, Camerin impressed the scholarship committee with her natural talent for the sport, willingness to learn, commitment and positive attitude. In her interview, when asked what she thought it means to be a good leader, Camerin responded, “Good sportsmanship, supporting your teammates and don’t be mean to the other team.”

Over the past few years, the association has focused on building an infrastructure for national team development that would allow gymnasts to advance to a skill level where they can represent their country in international competition. In 2011, Lauren Hill and Katie Scott were the first gymnasts to compete for the Cayman Islands, attending the Inter-Island Games and the Youth Commonwealth Games.

Earlier this year, Cayman sent a team of five gymnasts to the Island Games in Bermuda and Bethany Dikau brought home the first medal from an international event, winning silver on vault. During the past year, the Cayman Islands has also been recognized by the international gymnastics federation (FIG) and the Pan-American Gymnastics Union and gymnasts are training harder than ever to qualify for the upcoming Commonwealth Games, Junior Pan-American Championships and Youth Olympic Games.

On the back of their success at the national level, the association is turning its focus to making gymnastics more broadly accessible in the Cayman Islands. In 2013, the association established a scholarship fund to provide young Caymanians demonstrating talent, commitment and a positive attitude with an opportunity to follow their dreams.

The association is also working with the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee to access Olympic Solidarity funding to pilot a program for the government schools, promoting the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence, while providing the kids with a fun way to experience healthy exercise.

Association president Toni Pinkerton noted, “We have big aspirations for this program and we are very excited to be in a position to award this scholarship. We are so grateful to our sponsors who have kicked off the scholarship fund with us this year. We thank Burger King, KPMG, Butterfield Bank, Maples, Care Pharmacy, Pizza Hut, Comfort Suites, Popeye’s, Deloitte, Ogier, Kirk Freeport and the RE/MAX–Lund Team.”
