Ladies target Calgary qualifiers

Local netball will be seeking more international kudos in the New Year.

A national women’s team, being prepared by the Cayman Islands Netball Association, is going to Calgary, Canada in August for the 2014 American Federation of Netball Associations qualifiers for the 2015 World Netball Championships in Australia. Cayman association vice president Lyneth Monteith says local tryouts will be starting in January.

“The netball association has been invited to participate in the AFNA Qualifying Championship in Calgary,” Monteith said. “This qualifying championship is open to all member countries in the Americas region who wish to qualify for the world championships in Australia. From the Calgary championship, the first two teams will participate in the world championships.

“The netball association will be holding tryouts for players interested in getting a place on the squad training for this championship. The tryouts will be held on Jan. 9 and 13 at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Center from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on both days.”

Monteith went on to say prospective players need to meet three criteria: be a Cayman resident for one year, be available to attend both tryout days for the entire session and be a registered participant in the association’s 2013-2014 Appleby Netball League (Cayman’s national women’s competition) or be willing to register.

Registration forms are available from club teams or on the netball website. The deadline is Jan. 7 via email – [email protected] – or Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. at Camana Bay.

News of the Calgary tournament comes after a landmark moment for local netball this summer. The sport made history by sending an Under-21 team to the 2013 World Youth Netball Championships in Scotland, finishing 17th out of 20 countries with three wins in seven games for the country’s debut at the competition.
