Kiteboarding’s popularity will get a huge boost with two big events in Grand Cayman next month.
The Sweet Spot Cayman Watersports Centre in East End is hosting them there. First up is the third annual Adventure Camp with professional kiteboarders Damien Leroy, Annabel Van Westerop, James Boulding, Melissa Gil and Brandon Bowe.
Leroy was at a Sweet Spot camp hosted two years ago. He was the 2011 World Slalom Champion and voted Association of Wind and Watersports Industries kiteboarder of the year in 2011.
This is Leroy’s fourth visit to Cayman and is always a big part of the annual success of the adventure camp.
Bowe is from Naples, Florida and has been working in Cayman for a year with Sweet Spot giving advanced lessons and clinics.
The pros will be visiting Cayman to hold a five-day clinic for 15 local and visiting kiteboarders from Feb. 2-7.
“We have a ramp which we call a slider that we have nicknamed ‘The Rocket Launcher’ and will be part of our slider demonstration during the pro kite festival on Feb. 8,” said The Sweet Spot’s Mike Minichiello who is organizing it all.
The camp will feature riding with the pros, with facilities, activities and entertainment provided by The Sweet Spot.
The following weekend, The Sweet Spot will host an event open to the public, The Pro Kite Festival, featuring the same pro riders as the adventure camp. There will be a meet and greet session with the pros, gear demos and a slider demonstration.
It all concludes with a big air competition in front of The Reef Resort in East End with prizes, a beach barbeque and party.
Both events will be excellent displays of the kiteboarding scene locally and be of interest to locals and visitors alike and fun for all ages and non-kiteboarders.
