Reading food labels a must

With so much focus on weight loss, many people, when reading labels, focus on calories, fat and sugar content, as well as amount of carbohydrate versus protein.

While these are important in terms of blood sugar, fat, and weight regulation, it is a wise person who also reads the ingredients listings.

For this writer, any product that contains red and yellow dye is definitely off my list, including skin care products, as well as seemingly healthy foods and supplements that contain artificial sweeteners, chemical compounds and synthetic fillers.

When shopping for a good Vitamin C supplement recently, it was shocking to find so many of them contain damaging chemical fillers and the artificial sweetener aspartame.

The liver and kidneys have to work overtime to break down these harmful substances. It takes a few minutes to stand and read labels, but once you find the very best product, your research is done and you can relax knowing you are getting a good product. Shopping becomes easy and efficient.

As we see in Grand Cayman, great strides are being taken to improve the quality of food. We can buy local produce and organic foods and choose restaurants that serve quality foods. Supermarkets are stocking more organic and healthy foods, yet it is our responsibility to have a good look at labels to see if they deliver a truly healthy product.

I did find a brand of Vitamin C that contains none of the harmful ingredients and will use that to boost immunity during this season of increased tourism. Getting enough Vitamin C from foods is the ideal source, and it is recommended that we eat plenty of oranges, mangos, pineapples and dark greens. Oprah Winfrey did a study on vitamins and many well-known brands came up short.
